The plaque and tatar that is accumulated on the tooth and gums are removed with a help of an ultrassonic instrument called scaler. This instrument produces small vibrations that disintegretes the plaque and calculus accumucated and stuck on the teeth and gums.

No...It isn't a painful process as and how patient's fear. First the severity of the gum condition is examined to
calibrate the condition as mild to severe.Depending on the condition a LA spray for numbness or first a polishing of
teeth with a desensitizing paste would be given to make it easy for the patient to co operate.
Can Scaling and Polishing Harm my Teeth?
This Plaque that we refer to is a bacterial accumulation ,it is quite instable and washes away on carefull brushing.
Wereas Tartar/Calculus are hard deposits.They form when the plaque hardens by absorbing calcium from the saliva.
