“Myths surrounding Root Canal Treatment” (RCT)
Fear may crop in when we are confronted with the thought of undergoing a root canal treatment, (RCT). Much of the fear is unfounded due to common misconceptions surrounding RCT. The purpose of this post and the subsequent video presented by Dr. Jayalakshmi who runs Mithran Dental @ Adayar, (adds additional points), which put together would go towards allaying not only your fear but also the concerns you may have that pulls you back from acting.
Myths
#1. RCT results in persisting pain
This is an age-old misconception, which has its origin in older days when technology had not developed. The modern technology along with a simple external ‘anesthetic’procedure would demolish this myth. Contrary to this, the fact is that it is the pain from the severe toothache arising out damaged tissues in the affected tooth/teeth can do much more harm than an RCT. Besides, your dentist also doubles up as an expert in pain management and they would provide you with prescriptions after understanding your metabolic conditions.
#2. Better to sacrifice a tooth than undergoing RCT
Saving the tooth always would be the priority of your dentist. It is because anything that replaces a natural tooth is artificial in nature. It is then natural for you to explore with your dentist of an RCT, and barring exceptions, RCT lasts for a longtime. Extracting a tooth and replacing it with a crown and bridge or an implant could be an option but it is better to save your natural teeth with an Rct when it is possible as it is worth saving for a two reasons. One is that for a crown and bridge you will have to get your adjacent teeth compromised to have a fixed dentition ,other reason is that be it crown & bridge or Dental Implant it is going to cost you more than saving a tooth with a Root Canal Treatment .This can cause a hole in your pocket besides your suffering with a pain that lingers on for a longer period.
#3. RCT removes the roots of the tooth
This is not so. When you dentist does a RCT, they remove only the ‘pulp’from inside the tooth and do not disturb the roots of the tooth
#4. RCT causes illness
It is a false claim that needs to be junked as it has been circulating out of hearsay that is not backed by scientific evidence. The reason why such a myth circulate could be traced to the fact in the earlier days before modern medicine could identify the causes of illness, by way of coincident, RCT was thought to be causing illness. On the other hand, medical advancement has brought to the open the fact that those who have undergone RCT are at a ‘lesser risk’ of falling ill than those who have not undergone it driven by such a fear.
#5. Pregnant women should shd not undergo RCT
Prior to the undergoing of an RCT, an x-ray is taken but the radiation exposure of such an ‘x-ray’ is not only minimal but it is also aimed at the tooth only and no way has it focuses on the abdomen area. Moreover, an experienced dentist would take care to provide you with ‘leadapron’ to cover your belly. Besides, anesthesia is also safe and does not interfere with the pregnancy. The only thing that is needed from your side to let your dentist know that you are expecting.
